Hands Free Bluetooth Roundup, Secure Your Computer, Mohawks and Vinyl...
Veronica explains the mysteries of CD Audio. Does Memory Brand Matter? Testing with Memtest86+, California and Washington go hands free July 1st. Turntable recommendation! Is there a picture of Patrick with a Mohawk?

California and Washington go 'hands free' for cell phone use in the car on July 1st, so we got hands on with some hands free bluetooth earbud and speakerphone options from $65 to $125: Aliph's New Jawbone, BlueAnt's Supertooth 3 Jabra's SP5050 and the Venturi Mini, which includes an FM transmitter for A2DP audio.

Richard's upgrading the memory in his notebook and asks "Does the brand really matter?" Less than you'd think, in our experience, but no matter the brand or how much we pay, we run something like Memtest86+ or Memtest OS X right after we install it to make sure it's good to go out o' the box.

You know how we were gonna do a live stream of Tekzilla's taping this week? Well because of some... what do you call them? Ah yes "technicalities" we actually can't do it this week. So we heartily apologize to those of you who were waiting in anticipation. But we are planning to live stream Tekzilla's taping next week! You can find more details at revision3.com/watch

This week's Freebie download pick! is IcoFX, a handy icon editor lets you create, edit and modify icons for Windows XP, Vista and OS X!

A review of the nVidia GeForce GTX 280, Richard? We'll defer to our go to source for GPU reviews: ExtremeTech.com... it's expensive, fast, and sucks down ridiculous amounts of power. Check out Brute Force: Nvidia's GeForce GTX 280 and 260 to see how fast it really is!

If you have questions regarding video cards, CPUs, mobos, overclocking and other bits of PC gaming hardware, get your questions ready. We will be doing some shoots with the supergeeks over at extremetech.com. Email us: tekzilla@revision3.com!

Website We Just Can't Get Enough Of? Today's pick: Project Gutenberg, "Project Gutenburg" a volunteer project that collects, digitizes and make available as many cultural works to as many people as possible. Coming up this episode tell it watching go and it's free July 1 we gotta be a brief hands up rather for the -- letting your car. " LB on revision3.com slash -- and we want to apologize please do something happened we couldn't do this week we're definitely."

" Issues beyond our control. As they say while they are beyond our control I guess they're totally beyond our control totally under control. -- question I am too could."

" All right our first keynote comes from Richard who asked what upgrade my notebook memory -- the brand really matter."

" So really matter enemy and colonel lake cables in that way yeah and most of the time it is can chances are it's the house."

" Branded memory right -- buy the cheapest are labeled memory that that's designed to work with your Mac or your PC right just go to your local brick and mortar or online workshop divorce so candid remarks chances are it'll never. Break biggest things to make sure the memory by match at the specs for your notebook or desktop do you get that of the manual for your machine or on -- memory guys are picker. Now that said. We've actually had some high profile expensive brands of memory fail right out of the box it can happen it's really -- usual. We pretty much never had memory of course there are crucial OC ZG skill all the good stuff -- Matter fact we pretty much never had any memory fail. That was unbelievable in the house brand that the cheap stuff. If it was a 100% good out of the box FaceBook it never runs it sound like a car engine here and you felt worse company just tends to go forever. Boards in negotiations get is test it right out of the box right now and test 86. If you install on PC or run and test OS-X. If you install on a Mac basically what the man test as it runs a series. Checks against your memory runs always different patterns it's all the different I endeavors faces in your memory. -- you to nicely hardware issues from software he's in the past. It's our favorite tool for every testing the we have seen some really cool standalone every testing machines that we can't even come close to report. And they're not basically way because they don't really test over clocked memory so that's one that you're trying to figure out why your machines blowing up over communism. So it's good to know that if it works grabbed the box they'll probably be good glad that your machine. Yeah and there are a lot of times like if you not over clocking on. You know it basically figure out what specs you know you basically want to look at that the and makes it it has specs or cracker memory that you would like PC 100 and and if that's probably like -- he put it you know whatever that is the spec is usually that's close enough if you're doing for the absolute maps -- That's an entirely different question plants or later yeah later however I think it's time for a brief message from Microsoft."

" Yeah yeah. Yeah. It's."

" What -- Disney streaming download a free program that we find useful fun or incredibly interesting it is often I feel at. All the stock icons that come with XP Vista and OS-X are typically functional this about ruling your -- an icon that make your personal computer. Are well you know of personal. And I don't aspects this handy icon editor lets you create edit and lot of icons for windows XP Vista and OS-X. The interface offers a simple and truthfully designer lets you create custom icons with a minimum -- I OSX includes support for transparencies and true color for windows XP and Windows Vista. Standard image editing tools color gradient and filter effects like alerts are being handed off. Plus you can also have the ability to extract existing ninety country editing import images and most snazzy all a screen capture functions you can even make an icon of whatever happens beyond your desktop and -- surely create icon and scratch -- facts is asked that modifying existing icons designs pornographic images. So they're I think earlier on icons give I don't expect -- yeah. The following in the footsteps of new York New Jersey Connecticut Washington DC to virgin non -- addition of -- We the inhabitants of the golden state of California AKA 10% of the US population will be required to use hands free when using a cell phone when driving a motor vehicle or risk hefty fine. The state of Washington is also going hands free and both will take effect on July 1 the new month California does not prohibit dialing but drivers are strongly urged not -- style while threatening but it's not ambitious -- Bluetooth earpiece -- are okay as long as you don't have both ears cut it. You can use a speaker phone function of your wireless telephone while driving but if you get cold out there isn't -- I take it here first offense. Fifty dollars thereafter and with our beloved uniform -- and penalties scheduled -- The penalty assessments tape -- reach the penalty assessments a first offense is 76 dollars and segment and is 190. Dollars and no points under license though it."

" We'll show up on your permanent."

" And apparently we shouldn't be that I shouldn't be holding phones in general here's throwing -- all of the thorough and it has dual. This that's what's funny about this right as -- you know to state laws for safety but there's no points that are going to show up an impact your insurance. So."

" Your safety should be an option. President -- you're driving well and I can't love."

" Really should be talking period history device or not. As a matter fact in the in say California no one under the age of eighteen is supposed to be using a cell phone and all you can use it -- dialing 911 critical thing is. There's no teenagers are allowed the user a hand on her."

" I think it's good no offense and be teenagers out there but I mean the I was a teenager and I remember how totally like Charlotte and try the I. -- chink in the -- yeah."

" That's a scary thought to to a tyrants and hands free yes. Devices for basically because the whole idea this is basically get your hands on the steering wheel and often the cell phone even though it's legal would not let me back to. -- that -- you actually we both actually use the job on this that you Java. Yes no who was my favorite Bluetooth etc."

" I like yet I think it's really good on its very light and very comfortable I have a weird extra people in my ear which is very strange and now. But they it is it's okay I can actually get an -- my IPs and Pasternak. -- But you can you know snap these off just like any other achievements implement it aside in case of like an -- here staggering them. And that's why it's good police at. But it's very easy to configure -- to set up with your with yourself on they had some buddies at home all of my mom says she can't hear it well I can hear her find. Of letters that's because he you know. Here you know he's I don't teeny."

" Kiddies are actually pretty common for any Bluetooth device because what happens is right gives you. You got a microphone and then basically digitize the audio you press the audio and you transmitted wirelessly to your cellphones so there's certainly. Independent with -- Processing that you on this that you really weird that a couple of pretty good -- that it's a fairly advanced ten cents a share is that it makes it a little rubbery that he expressed that it -- this kind of what does the noise cancellation on that also looks pretty and it doesn't look like this crazy monkeys -- work. Had -- you -- yet -- like 45 -- this with -- of the new version of the jawbone sells about putting -- the old version which is slightly larger little square clip on. As easily ecstasy by the box that you."

" Yeah and so on is this that that is crazy. This is yet."

" The blue answer. It's super -- three. This is part of a whole fleet of devices that are basically designed to clip on visor of your car this -- really nice is -- Big volume buttons on it there's a clear you know hang out and green button in excellent article about this. He talks to you yeah I assured us yeah what's what's your opinion adding."

" over here will not shut out the did you like USS and a -- accent kinda sounded. Like something else trying to do US accent when somebody doesn't -- and you're trying to imitate."

" Alex heard somebody from the planes that can media and Brooklyn and the X -- those two accidents together as a little bizarre but basically the idea that this caller ID. On the talks you British English French or British or US English patient's face it's apparently there are radically different separate Spanish German. So it'll automatically download your phone but the upload your phone book to read this part he recognition. If your phone supports it it'll actually do -- we'll talk about some of that because it actually has a lot in common with the other visor clip on the budget which is Jabber is asked. Has less fans he's basically speaker a might only and you like the fact the whole -- is one -- is one big giant. Clicking and seek knowing compressed it the volume buttons are on the site which is was a little funky for meeting used to you like a little more volume out of it and also."

" Right so would be going like this that was advisors be sitting like this then how could you and you just yeah. You adviser for the release candidate but you don't really late this."

" And other than that -- that it's on goodness about 200 hours of standby time 120 hours and I think and I. Sticks on the front yes that's -- it works pretty well -- you -- intern or maybe I'm going debt which is entirely. It's also possible manned space so. One surprise is good or super -- earplugs it will a -- user canceled."

" the -- had built in -- you can plug in the old time is nice that both our offer if your phone supports them voice -- reject calls -- my phone didn't which -- a contest that which made me very sad. And both of course have built -- voice cancellation and the other both -- actually pretty good. Man it's not bad they're both about a hundred bucks what last of this is actually really cool adventure -- and I'll hopefully get some pictures of this lighted up in the car because it's a hands free brace yourself basically plug -- letters yeah. It is a hands free Bluetooth audio and phone -- typically a little under control here and it actually has the and then transmitted to work victory. NTT's eighteen DE two DP phone hate seeing an acronym that basically. You can stereo audio yes scarier than something you can't do on an iPhone -- and can't do another phones have basically you can stream your audio off your phone through this to Vietnam transmitter in this through your head -- units -- also actually has a built in eye muscles to hold it right that are just performances are totally throw at -- our. It's got a USB power adapters are USB devices. And it's got -- audio pastors he basically on run the audio out from this into your head yeah. A nifty yes so it's it's a pretty slick device. The so that we can talk about here is obviously if you happen to have a nice car with a built in Bluetooth has been built into the -- unit itself the Prius I think was the first time ever saw one of those devices that Clarkson and your your your peace. And head units Alpine has some pretty he would head units and they're in the middle of maybe if you get a curious will be some of those up for actually hear what the sound quality is yours basically you go from. Rocket out stereo from hell to you know your mom is calling and telephone conversation with -- car stereo which kind of fascinating. I cattle that feeling. A group Bluetooth."

" Yeah and on about random Chad thank you thank you very much welcome. Like -- well well done. I think and that's churches enthusiastic are mocking patriots and I thoughts about another question."

" Another question. Some temperatures get it. It's not bad hair. Be that way he says hoping you do review of the new Nvidia geforce GTX 280 graphics card that came a few days ago. You're welcome and we well -- think it'll -- out for you."

" Actually were were not -- idea. I don't need to. Well that's another it's an appeal for what it doesn't all the graphics aren't very closely -- most of the non gamers in the audience -- is immediately -- top of the line GPU we're talkin' brace yourself this is not a typo. What point four billion transistors. -- Yes he hit the -- Veronica and wouldn't get around one point four billion that's about it -- faster should be like. It isn't it to be the card itself is like pictures it faster than any car racing car he's ever made. It's huge it's basically takes -- two slots don't like -- ten inches long and it sucks down. These stupid and out of power keep this transistor switching. 304. Watts wonderful achieving -- PC power supplies 304 watts when you're gaining and you all the power on board. 148 watts and idle off. If you're wondering what 70800000. Watt power supplies report Bayer for cards -- done that come. I used to test graphics cards pretty much for a living. I don't do that anymore takes a lot of a lot of time a lot of expertise. Are go to news website format is extreme tech dot com I really like what Jason cross that about it. Did -- forward as Jason toward the geforce GX two -- reminds us of a drag racer. It's big and fast and has an amazing amount of horsepower but it's also very expensive it's terrible gas mileage. So if you're the benchmark -- basically see how it doesn't hold much different video games you should -- Jason's most excellent -- for -- invidious deportees extremely into sixty. The to a I can hit. Good to say because a 150 dollars more than my glass speaking it's a 600. Dollar world -- graphics card. Richard he said he -- to sixty is much better profit crisis well its its like 20% slower than the two leading but it costs 40% less so you get almost all the power for almost half the price. It's got a memory bandwidth and performance the wrong memory size necessary basically if you knock the socks off the latest videogames if you don't -- one processor. Like basically you know. The rule of thumb is your processor. In your graphics card should be basically work about the same so if you're running a 600 dollar graphics card you should have a big bad -- 600 dollars CPUs to heed that it's too. It's an amazing hard it's a ridiculous part it's this stupid card if you've got the money. Go out and Iowa and sell it to be used six months -- the next one comes out."

" Well so I hope those -- good answer for it there I was. A lot of information I'm sorry no that was going to guess I'm just I I had -- I can't that it was that power intensive."

" It's free yeah. More widely I'd I don't like at least four computers desktop computers right now that have 25300 watt power supplies for the entire computer. You probably right angle on this thing that's 300 watt lightbulbs. And that was that it."

" If you think you -- any questions regarding video card CPUs move those over clocking gaming hardware we'll get your questions ready we'll be doing some shows with the heads over an extreme tech dot com so if you want answers. Right amounts of the experts on PC hardware questions Tekzilla at -- three dot com. It's time I went today's sponsors HP media -- can -- If you're looking for a great media center Extenders that can find all your digital media no matter where it lives in your home look no further than HP media smart -- smart and displays a single list of all the digital media gathered from. " Looks like it's time for another website we just can't get enough of a website that we can't stay away from that to be useful to put your too darn irresistible. Today's big project Gutenberg. The book depository project Gutenberg is to collect digitized and made available as many cultural works as many people as possible. Thousands of books are available online for anyone access anywhere in the world and there are all absolutely free. You gotta read the books online to download that in plain text format the majority the books are in the public domain steel -- on the classics and -- quote Shakespeare Moby Dick actually even grins fairy tales. Copyright material is available from cases and in that case. There might be restriction to. Project Gutenberg is run by volunteers and he went into. Episcopal community including the collections just follow the guidelines on the website had your -- this amazing -- So next time you want to read Arnold classic -- feel like indulging your your book worm check out project work."

" Pack your of those paranoia always convert Big Brother tin foil hat we're kind of guy is as well I should be. Yeah I can't fuel the NSA can do. They're reading your thoughts right now okay and that's what the big servers -- stand down man stand down anyhow we get a question and expressing human rights and I'm currently using TrueCrypt on -- workstation for external drives I was wondering if there's always encrypt my installation -- re installing. As telling have to be true crypt and must be able to run under links."

" Okay for everybody that's like looking at this critical and but are they talking about TrueCrypt is its free open source. Disk encryption software encryption is the idea that nobody that your password and access the data is encrypted it's you know it's like basically decipher it's protecting your information some experts snooping. They can't read your stuff. TrueCrypt is pretty slick it's got a fair amount of respect in the crypto community which is -- and offers a variety of opera formulas for securing your data. Including a yes serpent who -- cascades. It's always nice to act options it don't -- you explain any of them because they start doing higher map my brain -- softly in a corner English good computers light trucks great. Crypto code weeping softly now. My understanding is -- TrueCrypt does system encryption on when it's teed up for two got six along with windows and Mac OS-X and a whole bunch of other. Flavors of basically windows and it supports you is all you ask you to encrypt the entire disk. It's pretty. Easy right so we've got TrueCrypt -- here. I go to system this -- the windows version there's also now graphical interface for clinics and negotiate each answer connected to well there's a whole thing about plausible than nine it will be built into this in some pretty wild stuff -- I'm not gonna explain right now and encrypt your system drive. And the idea right. If you encrypt the whole drive -- Everything on your PC's hard drive into -- and on the flight as you -- your applications your information the operating system itself the cash anything on there any application you run. That he can't suck a little processor overhead if you're like a gamer. But actually for most you know modern machine it's not too bad -- a fairly secure situation so you basically select encrypt the whole drive and hit next and I'm not gonna be there right now you know what. Now I'm not gonna do that right now if you know if I forget the password okay. Just do. Yeah are being totally running on Vista not. Securing vista's kind of an apartment itself. And look -- sectors will talk what I love Vista it's growing on me out more often TrueCrypt and other encryption tool PGP is a prime example used to encrypt a particular -- money driver thumb drive like basically what our viewers doing what I do with a with a thumb drive and it has a budget financial information on the secret of personal times -- government takes over interest corpus."

" You know you laugh at when they come I'm going to be prepared you're immune holdings now. Now if I'm wrong about system encryption for Olympics in truth is now basically I sucked and -- Phishing emails on how to set it up properly. And if your -- with national security you're really motivated hackers TrueCrypt is acceptable to me cold boot attack. Where and and I quote an attacker with physical access to the computers able to retrieve encryption keys are running operating system Michael voting machines and pretty much sucking the information off of persistent information that sits inside the -- thank you Wikipedia for help on that one. And pretty much any data that. Persistent memory and assistant (%expletive) gets -- that how exactly would suck that persistent information and the data on the Buddha machine before it's over written by new information. I didn't want to think about somebody up there and volunteers come and show us now TrueCrypt to encrypt data on your try not -- it's running through your memory or your processor. Can help them I would like hyper apparently territory now -- today is like the hard drive is encrypted but it has. Been mocked so hard. We have to do encrypted by information actually use it right and you have to host the un encrypted master key in your system memory decrepit yet. To have TrueCrypt is shut down normally it basically white its password but of the machine gets the power organic Burgos and hibernation password it's gonna live. On likely not really. But worth considering if you had serious paranoia issues or you think your kid sister might -- loaded something nasty in your system like key logger which case when you enter your password to open up the data. She's gonna get it on the key logger -- some sneaky yet."

" Pushing us art here she is tomorrow will double."

" Do you agree that there viewers its its. -- bloggers are just frightening things that means I can't read before them. Specifically and the numbers so that's it and we're almost done but this latest attack and -- centers."

" It's pretty it's the isn't that pretty things sometimes if you think the candidate and other out of video email capsules."

" Excellent analysis and more well I was that that help them that the -- that you're the I don't take them down -- this email -- video comes from keynote."

" Yeah I have to Ahmanson's that's awesome collection. Andy his old turntable and when he was in high school but it's just not cut. And get complacent I'll let you know the best way -- explain amendment. I -- the bit about -- but I'm not sure which would -- best you can. And also an unhappy on this month -- seen pictures seventeen year old Patrick Norton my -- CD. Got any patent. Yeah so hale -- turntable and she wants a picture of you us in a little can."

" I I patches had a girlfriend so you had a --"

" And start now I've never ever talk I had a number of curious unfortunate and well spiked hair combinations. I did an Alpine green here for manic panic that appeared on St. mark's. I've certainly spend quality time as he -- market is so I'll pay you know what. I'm not even going and I were like black African sixth grade I was hanging out there yet -- so. Back to Achilles first question turntable but what's your. Dobbs you guys are -- turntable is it might be worth doing a little refurbishment on that you can replace the belt to belt drive turntable and update the cartridge I have to really like burritos headphones and also make amazing cartridges and teach. She expensive anywhere from like 42. A hundred something dollars online if you want to drop it like I just did. -- little pile parts like batsman. Well not okay here's the needle is protected in the cartridges essentially. A device for amplifying the signal was picked up by the -- that it goes in through the tone arm that it goes into the photo pre amplifier. Either in your turn people or -- your receiver or between your turntable and here."

" Now felon off -- it -- you -- hear an audio and their idea behind it finally you know with got bigger questions and if you're up for buying something new though yet be basically of course --"

" Fresh -- fresh needle in and replace -- belt can often really wake capital turntable if you -- that -- brands that the -- go with techniques that correct driver like this new market picked up -- not bad. But the audio file books which you go with the belt drive its -- your audio from rumble in some weird effects inside basically -- they -- between the motor and the -- DJ he's direct drives that don't Apple from the scratch a match -- I can't really hear the difference if you want to -- audio file nice audio -- turntable. The folks who stereo file have a lot of love for -- is. PU and basically they keep like. Chop and the price by thirty year 333%. Decent cartridge could tone arm nice -- sells for 350 bucks and it's really stereo spotlight since it concert ticket out it's gotta be an amazing product because these are people who listen to 10000 dollar -- amplifiers and 35000 dollars speakers. So you know the good photo pre -- is a good I don't feel she. I thousand dollars speakers that nobody else it's it's -- for 350 dollars as it is pretty viewed. You know if you got the money for new turntable and I think depending where you live there might be it could use audio fight. Like audio file to your dealer. Almost all the Europe bought when I was in college in New York City and when I was first working in New York City because I mean like eight dollars a year he replaced of the stereo exchanged. Stuff sent an amazing it was dirt cheap because it was using his hand me downs from people that were operating at some people a lot of people upgrade -- the good equipment and then sell off the old stuff --"

" I don't think that we markets and look on priceless and look for trade and -- and things like you people are always trading partners is gonna turn eaten at your and a budget that's probably -- yet -- speakers can be -- you need to be able to hear the speakers for it by hand but you know amplifiers they were cream bars -- work to cats and search online students. Ticket just. So -- that it was okay."

" And yet here I thought the world and mrs. Norton -- Are right before -- take -- moment -- one of our sponsors. These are the people to make these episodes possible run without them you can have your weekly Tekzilla fix. If you make an impact on line -- dot com has what you need dot com -- one dollar and 99 cents -- school class hosting fast and easy website builders and quite a bit more. And you can now tell your story to the world without."

" The dot means that palpable the need to talk about you not -- usually it's not in me is that exciting way Russia is only open until July 17."

" Good decision to leave your question multiple times I. Act now and create a unique. Personalized based on the Internet with dot Andy. When get a deal -- include tech tidbits to speak to check out in the -- an additional five bucks off in the order of thirty dollars or more. Of restrictions apply -- the site for details it was a favorite here. Tech silly feature piece of the Internet anecdote -- dot com and enter that code support us by supporting yeah. I just realized something -- I don't think there's a picture needs to be TV's but there is -- picture of me on top of the crowds that descended -- at Maxwell's. With one hand like of this lead figures out what handle my head and were singing suburban home."

" Of that picture I can buy an epic I'm picture scaly that was guzzlers we we took. It once did -- long -- there on us."

" One has pretty bad and actually can work -- was believed it needed to screen all of that now that we're pretty awesome right. Awful lot of Alpine greed tens did. Time for more tough tech question is yes that is why we're here -- battling you've you've got a pilot questions that I'd like given the -- episode it. Well -- to steal the spotlight should you know. Our next question comes to us from just. -- C found some kind of audio optical illusion to make any sense has been kind of audio optical it and whatever. All mission. Is her friend -- Patrick it is just read in August answered."

" It every Veronica this question has been agony for awhile since I could by the acceptable answer anywhere on the Internet I turned you. The standard CD RCD can hold 700 megabytes why on God's green earth can -- put two episodes of oh say the twit network security now which are only twenty -- thirty megabytes each. But -- one point five hours all other single CD."

" makes sense Justin. Well. Your problem is that you Washington -- twit network not textile. You're gonna start a war with -- there is are you war brewing there is no more room you can tell me about this cold front. --"

" Aren't like front and again."

" Isn't this really makes sense when you first look at it but there's -- difference between CD audio and the compressed audio formats -- we here on podcasts like artists and other audio fuzzy download on the net. So outlook get a little historical here the final weeks."

" This is on compressed analog audio. If you think."

" This is a redbook audio CD the audio on the disk stored in zero's and one's called -- stored in PCM reports code modulation. Doesn't McClellan PCM is that the digital representation of analog signal. And in the case of the -- read books back like this -- PCN is to channel sixteen bit audio at 44 got one kilohertz. Great show, I particularly liked all of the audio geekiness (I studied audio engineering for a while).

Great show but the GTX 280 power usage was a bit misleading. The chart in Jason's review is total system power, not power draw from just the card...

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2320132,00.asp

The GTX 280 uses about 183W on it's own
The GTX 260 is using about 146W
The 4850 is using about 95W
The 4870 uses about 120W

Thats not to say the GTX 280 isn't power hungry, the 9800 GX2 dual core was drawing the same (183W).

Also, you don't need a 1000W PSU to run any of these cards, a good quality 500-550W with good +12V rail will be enough. The 1000W+ PSU's only come into the picture when running these cards in multiples (SLI or CrossFireX)

For example, two GTX 280's in SLI would pull about 347W and three would grab 523 no-so-green-but-highly-entertaining watts.
