If you look at the two year cost, nothing changed. The first iPhone was more expensive, but had less expansive service. The new one is more in the usual US cell phone model, where the carrier discounts the purchase price and makes it up during the two year life of the contract.
The 3G is no longer available (in the US) without an AT&T contract. And AT&T has raised the price, mostly for the data side.
If you look at what you will pay over the two years, its about $2000. Not the $200 price, that is just the loss leader.
TomTom, Garmin and others sell GPS for a lot less. What the iPhone gets its value from is the total package.

"You can afford $2000 for a GPS? Just get a Garmin on TomTom.
All the spin about how much cheaper the iPhone 3G is just reality distortion fields. AT&T is still the only vendor, and they jacked up the price by more than the $200 that Apple claims. $30 a month more for 24 months is $720.
Enough iPhone already. Sure, its cool, but its insanely overpriced. Talk about competitors alternatives, etc."
I don't get the $2000 and I don't get the jacked up part. Maybe we need to wait for July 11th or whenever the G3 is actually available.
The iPhone is certainly not for everyone, most likely including me, but maybe, just maybe with the new model and price... The first hype says it is half the price and twice as fast. For some like me that might bring it into the range where it could be interesting. If the GPS maps can be in it then there could be value level for my needs that starts to get my attention.
Some people already are with AT&T, and some may be out of contract, ready to think about a new phone, and maybe even thinking of staying with AT&T.
Some people may be able to derive benefits from the $30 a month charge that are worth the cost. Some may like the idea of a cell phone that gives them something approaching reasonable web access away from home, and perhaps they don't lug a laptop with them to get it or a GPS (some people can find there way around with a map if they have one with enough information on the area they are in, even without GPS, but it is not handy to carry hard copy maps at that level covering a wide area :-) )
And keep in mind some people might, just might, actually like Apple products - it IS possible, however likely... ;-)

On the new iPhone is a map database saved in the phone, or is it all via internet? I need GPS most in areas on the road out where there is no wireless coverage. It would use a fair amount of memory, and take a while to download, but I don't need a lot of storage for music and so on so it would be attractive for me.

Forget screen capture, etc.
just open the slide show in powerpoint and select "Save as movie..." from the File menu. Then move that movie into iDVD and you're done!
I felt compelled to post and frustrated when you guys went into un-needed screen capturing... AHHH!

"I'd love to see Camilla do a segment of some kind spoofing the Swedish Chef! That would be hilarious.
Patrick could be Gonzo, and Victoria doesn't seem to mind bear suits, so she can be Fozzy. Roger can be Animal, and Serafina can be Kermit :D"

"We love you Camilla. And all of your Swedish Bikini Team friends. Too bad Rev3 won't let you wear your official bikini uniforms. Then again, they won't let V wear her StarTrek uniform either.
Smart, talented, funny and good looking women always are appreciated."
You know, I bet if we bitched and moaned enough, Rev3 just might cave in. :D I mean, it only took six months of complaining to get separate feeds for the weekly and daily shows. ;)
