I've pondered this for a few episodes now, and it has finally gotten to me enough to warrant posting it as a question.

Systm's background: it's a schematic of what, exactly?

While I can imagine it just being a random set of circuit symbols; given Dave Randolph's involvement with the set design, I'm more willing to bet that it is a diagram of something.

Anyone know what it is?

Filters never restore anything. They just remove stuff. They can be useful to remove signals that are labeled "noise" but never actually fix anything.

Each step in the recording process is lossy. Some more than others.

Even a $2000 microphone does not record "exactly" what is in the air.

Trade shows for the professional trade made tons of sense, and are still useful. There is, for example, a big toy show in February where the Toy reps and the store reps figure out what to order for delivery in September for the Christmas season.

Trade shows that let in consumers is silly. And Vegas for a big show is more zoo than useful. Hours to get a bus, lines for food. Bletch.

The retail version of ghost is crippled compared to the enterprise version. Where I used to work, There was nothing ghost would not copy except the older apple formated media.

I'd really like/need to make a portable battery Power Pack (like
Bowens Explorer 1500ws Battery Generator just as an example) used to power studio strobes/flash units for photography. A good set is typically over $1,000. I'm sure you guys can come up with something at a fraction of the cost.

What are some good kits to use for a "first project" to learn to solder? I don't want to do a headphone amp....

I just finished a little project to create an automatic way to rip, encode, and tag my home dvd collection to my apple tv using a little bit of Perl and Applescript. All that the user needs to do is insert the dvd, type in the title into the popup, and click ok.

The scripts rip and encode the movie using the HandbrakeCLI with the AppleTV preset, decomb filter, and a few other settings to automatically use the longest title and only forced subtitles. When that finishes, the Yahoo movie API is used to look up the title, rating, cover art (low quality, but better than IMDB), description, actors, director, genre, etc based on the name that was entered into the popup. Atomic Parsley is then used to tag the ripped MP4 file with these fields. The file is then added to iTunes and automatically synced off to the Apple TV!

Applescript is triggered when a dvd movie is inserted and creates the popup. That script then calls a Perl script that handles the encoding, Yahoo movie lookup, and tagging commands. This script also copies the final movie file into the destination directory (in my case on an external HD), and calls another small bit of Applescript to add the file iTunes and eject the dvd.

For discs that HB has problems with I rip first using MTR (or AnyDVD in Windows if that can't handle it), naming the directory the title of the movie, and then use a Finder Plugin to kick off my scripts.
