Balmer is adamant on taking it two steps back. In my lifetime thus far I've easily paid more for Microsoft OSes and development software than I've spent on cars.

Know what you mean. The better half has me on a tight leash when it comes to computer spending. Years ago, I worked in an independent family owned computer mostly software store. Having a second job was a big help to pay for the items I used for my teaching job. Everyone who worked there did get a bit of free software for promotional purposes from some of the software companies. We did have to buy mswindows for twenty five bucks or so. Most of that stuff has gone to a better place now. With linux it is still hard to turn down a free pc though. We picked up another p3 mb and case this last weekend.

Show Idea: LAN Parties/Gaming

It's the same as organising any other meeting.

Except, it's about the most expensive you can host. The only way to get any return is by selling either seats (booooooo!!!) or food (but the food be purchased there should not be a forced thing).

A further economical and business problem is many gamers have little to no money.

Buying a field and letting people drive what ever they want in it for a price has a far better business model than a LAN party. Running costs are low (land tax?), safety issue? May be, just get people to sign a release that says you aren't responsible for them getting hurt.

Aside from the financial and business problems it's easy.

You can try using another machine's driver. Theoretically, it should work so long as its for the same OS and the same Broadcom card. The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work. But make sure you can reinstall your current driver if you have to.

As for Broadcom not offering drivers, although it would be nice if they did its really not their place to do so. They are a parts manufacturer and only sell their products to OEMs, not end users. Its up to the OEM (in your case, HP) to provide the proper drivers and support.

You're right, its probably not even 5 percent. Its like putting high octane gasoline in an old VW van. And as a programmer I get a headache every time I have to write code that deals with multiple processors. There's a reason I keep a bottle of Maker's Mark around!

For almost all users, a faster dual core and more memory would make far more sense than a quad core. Even then, Joe Average Homeuser is not going to do anything that takes advantage of a dual core. Multiple cores are mostly a marketing gimmick to induce people to buy upgrade hardware when they don't really need to. And except for gaming and certain other applications, faster processors are simply an excuse for sloppy programming.

Project Idea: DIY 3d printer

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone knew about these projects; some seem to be remarkably cheap for their capabilities and would probably make an amazing episode of Systm. Think of it: having problems finding a certain part? print it. It'd be like a DIY, DIY-machine.

Keyboard in episode 64?

That was a pretty sweet keyboard that was used when in episode 64 (mythbuntu media center pc). Does anyone know what it was called so I could get one like it.

The HD-PVR has linux drivers

So I just got a pleasent suprise, MythTube, which is currently an unoffical plugin but that may change, is adding support to download video podcasts along with what it normally does, Youtube. You have to get the sources to install it but I was told currently Revision3 is hardcoded in although i haven't tried it myself. You can't have it pre-download the files for you yet but that support should be in the future.
