well, the plan is to eventually get caught up. But I don't see the point in jumping to the current issues when I'm enjoying following the continuity from House of M onward. I'm probably going to go read Deadly Genesis tonight.

If you're interested in something that picks up from House of M, I'd suggest Peter David's most recent 'X-Factor' series, starting with 'The Longest night' TPB. It's just gotten to 50 issues and while it flounders a bit in the middle (you can probably skip the volume with the Secret Invasion crossover) it's a great story. It's a different set of characters than you will have encountered in other books but not in a bad way.
ETA: I'm a fan of 'Deadly Genesis,' though that actually branches out into a different set of stories -- Brubaker's "rise and fall of the shi'ar' empire' which feeds into 'Emperor Vulcan' which feeds into the larger 'War of Kings' crossover.

I've been reading X-men and related X-books for 25 years now. The stories and titles have had their ups and downs, but I still love the characters today. But I have to agree with most of the people here, there is SO much source material that picking it up these days means accepting you won't understand everything that is happening for a long while.
That being said, here are some highlights of the last 5 or 6 years: Madrox 1-5 and X-Factor (Volume 3) --- Read it, read it, read it. Not only has this been the consistently best written book in the X-World, it's been my favorite in the Marvel Universe. And Peter David has done the impossible in making Jamie Madrox one of my favorite characters in comics today. Astonishing X-Men 1 - 24 --- Whedon's run was outstanding and so much fun. X-Men: Deadly Genesis, Uncanny X-Men: Rise & Fall Of The Shi'ar Empire , X-Men: Emperor Vulcan --- The Vulcan storyline. It follows various members of the X-Family as they confront and pursue Gabriel Summers throughout the entire galaxy. The plot was well-paced and was a great lead-in to X-Men: Kingbreaker and the War of Kings event this summer, which I loved. A lot. X-Men: Messiah Complex --- A 13-part event that involved all four X-books at the time. Readers can debate the quality of this event, but it did involve many of the themes, heroes, and villains of the mutant world. Don't expect to recognize all the players. Just read and hang on for the ride. Hope this helps! Last edited by genelaw9 : 11-01-2009 at 04:15 PM. |

X-Factor is pretty damn awesome. Peter David has a habit of taking these D-List characters nobody cares about, and making them some of my all time favorites.

Yeah, his Madrox mini was flippin' sweet. I was lucky I was able to pick it up super cheap.

Tonight I picked up my first non-trade comic book issues: Astonishing X-Men 31 and 32. Wow, they were so good! After Whedon's run, the Ghost Box arc was a let down, but the new issues just blew me away!
