History has not been kind to the geek. The poorly educated have always been with us; the highly educated man has not (at least in large numbers).

You should watch the History Channel series about the Dark Ages. It shows how fragile civilization really is, and it shows how violent mankind can be, given the chance. If it wasn't for the monks, we wouldn't have hardly any history about ancient Greece and Rome. They kept what was left of western civilization alive.
