New Digg Extension for Firefox 3, Michael Phelps Swims into Gold Medal History, Hershey's Isn't Milk Chocolate, Sexiness Widens PC/Mac Price Gap, and Sex With Steel Bench.
Live SHOW!
Come to see us do a live Diggnation on Tuesday evening, the 26th of August at 6pm! We'll be a part of NVIDIA's NVISION 2008 and the show will take place at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. This is the biggest venue we have ever had for a live diggnation -- 4,000 seat capacity stadium seating. If you are anywhere near the bay area - we would LOVE to have you join us and help fill the auditorium -- its completely free and open to all ages.

We're back with our San Francisco neighbors and good friends, Dolby Labs. We've been over here a few times. If you're under a rock, you might not know already that Dolby is a global leader in technologies that are essential in the best entertainment experiences. Since it’s founding in 1965, the company has focused on improving the entertainment experience—at the movies, in the home, and on the go. Dolby helped define high-quality audio and surround sound in cinema, high definition broadcast, home audio systems, televisions, cars, DVDs, games, mobile devices, and personal computers.
The new Firefox 3 Digg Extension has been released, and Kevin runs through the video that shows you how it works. You can now see notifications as they happen and it's easier to submit stories right from your browser. Alex is blown away.

Badass Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps makes history with 10 gold medals, surpassing Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis. Phelps shows us that you can drink and still be healthy. Good news aside, Kevin is into older women -- he shares his opinion on hooking up with 41 year old swimmer, Dara Torres, and is not a fan of little girl gymnastics.

The guys are bummed (and scared) that Hershey's is no longer legally considered milk chocolate due to cutting corners in cost. They examine the ingredients of the new candy and wonder... what ever happened to the chocolately good times at Hershey, Pennsylvania?

Sexiness could be the factor between the widening price difference between Macs and PCs. Macs are getting more expensive, which Kevin can defend, while Alex doesn't exactly know where he got his copy of Microsoft Office.

A lesson for all men: There are a lot of places to put your penis, but this doesn't mean you should actually try it. Don't have sex with a steel bench - you could lose your... junk, and it will be embarrassing. What is also embarrassing? Wanting to be with a cartoon character, like GI Joe's Lady J.

The guys from Dolby were kind enough to make a reggae remix of the Alex's Netflix sponsor song. Thanks for the submission, Brandon! Stephen also made an equally awesome remix of the song. Check back soon for download links to these mp3 files.

NHTSA
In 2006, 13,470 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. These fatalities accounted for 32 percent of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States. 59 percent of those killed in single-vehicle crashes on weekend nights had BACs of .08 or higher. If you are planning to drink alcohol with friends, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
Dolby
What we want to talk about specific to Dolby today while we're here is Dolby Headphone technology.
- Listen to Surround Sound Using Any Set of Headphones
- Creates a personal surround sound listening experience using any set of stereo headphones
- Personal surround sound experience at home and on the go
- More comfortable listening experience than conventional stereo headphone playback

I listen to diggnation audio only at work. This episode scared the shit out of me. I kept thinking that someone was talking behind me... especially when hippy glen would chuckle! holy shit! was like a freaky clown or something. please don't ever do an episode in this format again. I can't handle this shit.

What games are using Dolby Headphone tech? I looked for a list but couldn't find much info of any value, or that was helpful.
::Edit::
PC games to be specific.

that's what happens when you record in a recording studio that is set up for super high quality sound. :P

From observing my PC friends, I think when you add up the value of your time spent fixing PCs vs the value of my time ($150/hr) spent fixing my Macs, your PC is more expensive in the end."
umm, are you paying a premium for the hardware, software, both? The prices quoted put $800 difference between comparable Macs and PCs. Is the slicker hardware and OS worth it? To some, yes. to the average user, most likely not. The fact is, that while yes a BMW gives you a different experience, the average users don't/won't see the benefit in spending twice as much or more on it.

Agree whole heartedly. Kevin is right, computers are a lot like cars for value-added. A neon and a lexus IS F both have the same basic stuff to get you from point A to point B, but there is no comparing the experience of driving one to the other. The value-added factor of macs gives Apple the highest consumer satisfaction ratings in the personal computer world. *link*

"As sad by others, it's probobly your system.
Used a 2.1 system and well the quality was quite awsome even then. The bass was swoofy and groovy, the high tones was crystal clear and well overall a really nice sound.
Altho i got better sound with headphones since well it was recorded for headphones. Actually thought they were in my living room for a second."
I actually have to agree. There is a lot of disgruntlness but we are talking about the pionear of surround sound here so the source (original source) is not the problem it is the destination device it is played on. My 5.1 system at home played awesome and even my Headphones played decent for a $20 pair. Let's face it the best out are not the over-the-ears headphones. they are the earbuds that block ambient noise. If you are trying to play it through anything that is a mono device THAT is the problem.
That said I believe the loss in sound "levels" is an issue with the encoding tools for the various formats. I have the same issue as the G4 podcast where their volume is too low. Revision 3 shows are better but every now and then I have show that is just too quiet.

Best episode EVER. They should record in Dolby headphones more often. If you have a desktop you have a headphone jack unless it is 10+ years old. If not invest in a 5.1 surround system. This is the second episode that I have seen where they (mainly Alex) seem more relaxed and the two had me bustin up laughing.
Ok gotta give Dara Torres props for having a child in 06 and STILL looking like that and while her FHM pics look sexy she scares even me and I do weightlifting.
Oh and be kind, I use both OS X and windows and I still didn't know they had the backgrounds out. Its called needing time to do the research for those of us working full time with families and continuously educating ourselves. It can be a science for balancing time. The forums are a very useful tool to speed it along if someone already knows the answer.
Here's one. Most sci-fi geeks have heard of the 501 1st for SW lovers right (bikerscouts, stormtroopers etc) are there local diggnation legions or groups that do meet-ups in different towns?

yea... I kind of felt the same way, but then again it's tech dedicated to having headphones, so obviously it's going to suck on not headphones. It's like taking a 7.1 surround source and playing on 2 speaker setup...
In any case, it sounded decent on my hdtv's speakers. It was horrible when he was digging around for beers, as that sound seemed to cover up everything else. Sounded odd at the beginning, but either got better or I got used to it about half way through.
